What other secrets should you know about the Las Vegas shows and how to maximize the experience? We’re here to help you find the best venues and options off and on the Las Vegas Strip.

History of Las Vegas entertainment

Las Vegas entertainment began in the 1940s with lounge acts and big band performances catering to gamblers looking for late-night fun. The Rat Pack—Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.—defined the city’s golden age in the 1950s and ‘60s, bringing a mix of music, comedy, and cool sophistication to casino showrooms. As Vegas grew, so did its spectacle, with Elvis Presley’s 1969 residency at the International Hotel cementing the city’s reputation for world-class headliners.

By the late 1980s and ‘90s, Vegas entertainment evolved beyond traditional music acts.

Siegfried & Roy redefined Strip productions with their elaborate magic and white tiger performances and even played up their fame in movies like Vegas Vacation.

Cirque du Soleil transformed theater with Mystère (1993), O (1998), and KÀ (2004), blending acrobatics, storytelling, and immersive staging. The rise of mega-resorts fueled these large-scale productions, shifting Vegas from a gambler’s paradise to a full-scale entertainment destination.

Today, entertainment continues to evolve with immersive experiences like The Sphere, Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart, and AI-driven performances. As technology reshapes live shows, Vegas remains at the forefront, constantly reinventing what it means to be entertained.

Las Vegas kept up with the evolution of entertainment and even expanded its cherished title when major league sports set up shop. The city is now proudly the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World.

Show Seasons in Vegas

Las Vegas shows and concerts each march to the beat of their own drummer (or orchestra). That means there’s no distinct shoulder season or off-season as general guidance.

However, every show will have “dark dates.” That means days of the week where shows aren’t performing, usually early in the week or mid-week. Check the dark dates on any show by looking at the ticket calendar. Two days during the week will not be available. Those are the dark dates.

The dark dates can change throughout the year based on holidays, events, or conventions. One of the slower months for Las Vegas shows and concerts is December. That’s when many shows might give their staff a bit longer of a holiday break.

During August and September, Las Vegas concerts and show schedules might slow down since tourism numbers take a dip.

Locals know that these slower times of the year also offer a chance to get discounted tickets as the venues try to fill as many seats as possible.

Locals Discounts on Las Vegas Shows

The benefits of being a Las Vegas local go beyond the great communities, low tax environment, and stellar amenities. When you know where to look, you start to see the locals discounts that seem to be around every corner.

How do you find them? It’s as simple as asking in most cases. You can start with a simple online search for “Nevada discount” or “locals discount” for your favorite show. Companies like Caesars also make it crystal clear what type of discounts await right now.

Here are a few things to know about finding locals discounts.

  1. Check the blackout dates. Locals discounts will generally not apply during busy holiday weekends or for show times that sell out frequently.
  2. Have your ID ready. Most ticket systems and box offices will require proof of a Nevada license to get the ticket. That means one of your first stops when you move to Las Vegas should be the DMV to get a new license.
  3. Check the fine print. Each venue sets its own rules about how to use local discount codes. Some might require online reservations, while others could insist you come to the box office or call ahead.
  4. Sign up for free loyalty reward programs. Even if you don’t gamble much, the loyalty cards might get you emailed or snail-mailed discount offers that aren’t available to the general local public.
  5. Know what kind of ticket you’re getting. Most shows will have general admission and VIP tiers of tickets. Locals discounts might only apply to general admission. Always ask ahead of time.

Don’t assume there isn’t a locals discount if it isn’t clearly displayed on a website or at the box office. Just ask if there is a locals discount or ticket upgrade options for Nevada residents.

Family-Friendly vs. Adults Only Shows

Before you book tickets to one of the Las Vegas shows, check the age restrictions. Some Las Vegas shows are adults-only due to content, themes, or venue policies, but that doesn’t always mean they’re risqué.

Many are restricted to 18+ or 21+ because they’re in casino venues where minors aren’t allowed, feature strong language, or serve alcohol. At the same time, some shows do have artistic partial nudity.

Comedy shows, magic acts, and immersive experiences often have adult themes, but not all are raunchy—some just cater to a mature audience. Meanwhile, family-friendly options like Cirque du Soleil’s O, Blue Man Group, and pop concerts provide all-ages entertainment. Vegas offers both wild and wholesome experiences, so it’s worth checking age restrictions before booking.

Types of Las Vegas Shows

While this isn’t a comprehensive list of all Las Vegas shows, you will get a sample of the types of performances, from mind-bending to mind-blowingly funny to awe-inspiring. Plus, with so many musical stars holding residencies, the chance is excellent that your favorite stars will be center stage at some point during your Las Vegas life.

Cirque du Soleil

It’s no Mystere how Cirque du Soleil made its way to Vegas. In the early 1990s, Wynn, then the owner of Treasure Island, partnered with Guy Laliberté, Cirque du Soleil’s founder. The result of that partnership was Mystère, which debuted at Treasure Island in 1993. Unlike typical Vegas shows, Mystère had no headliner, no traditional plot, and no showgirls—it was pure spectacle.

From there, Cirque du Soleil’s presence in Las Vegas exploded, redefining Strip entertainment with groundbreaking productions that pushed the limits of theater, technology, and acrobatics.

Mad Apple (New York-New York)

Age Limit 18+

Mad Apple is Cirque du Soleil’s newest and most unconventional Vegas show, blending comedy, live music, acrobatics, and a NYC-style nightclub vibe. Unlike other Cirque shows, it heavily incorporates stand-up comedians and a more relaxed, cabaret-style format. With an 18+ age limit, it caters to an adult crowd without being overly risqué, making it a unique alternative to traditional Cirque productions.

NOTE: Unlike Zumanity, the previous show at NYNY, there is no nudity in Mad Apple.

KÀ (MGM Grand)

Age Limit: 3+ (Under 18 must be with an adult)

is one of Cirque du Soleil’s most cinematic productions, featuring a massive, rotating stage that tilts vertically, creating gravity-defying battles and stunts. Unlike most Cirque shows that emphasize abstract storytelling, KÀ follows a clear narrative of royal twins on an epic adventure. Its elaborate martial arts choreography and technical innovations make it stand out as one of the most action-driven productions in Vegas.

Michael Jackson ONE (Mandalay Bay)

Age Limit: 5+

Michael Jackson ONE is Cirque du Soleil’s high-energy tribute to the King of Pop, blending his biggest hits with jaw-dropping choreography, aerial stunts, and cutting-edge visuals. Unlike other Cirque productions, it leans heavily into concert-style effects, including holograms and synchronized dance performances that feel straight out of an MJ tour.

Mystère (Treasure Island)

Age Limit: None, suitable for all ages

The OG of Cirque shows in Vegas, Mystère set the standard for the city’s now-iconic Cirque productions. It’s pure, classic Cirque—no elaborate storyline, just stunning acrobatics, whimsical humor, and a surreal atmosphere. Unlike the newer Cirque shows, which lean on big tech and narratives, Mystère stays true to the roots of circus artistry, making it a must-see for fans of the company’s original vision.

“O” (Bellagio)

Age Limit: 5+

What sets “O” apart is its aquatic stage, where performers dive, swim, and execute aerial stunts over and within a massive water-filled theater. It’s the most visually striking of all Cirque shows in Vegas, with dreamlike imagery inspired by the fluidity of water. While Mystère and KÀ rely on ground-based action, “O” creates a mesmerizing floating world, making it one of the most unique and enduring shows on the Strip.

It’s also worth noting that the Beatles’ Cirque show ended its run in 2024.

Comedy Cellar

The Comedy Cellar, at the Rio, brings the legendary New York comedy institution to Las Vegas. The show offers a no-nonsense stand-up experience with a rotating lineup of top-tier comedians. Las Vegas residencies vary in length, ranging from short-term engagements lasting a few weeks to multi-year runs. Some artists, like Adele and Usher, commit to limited dates spread over months, while legends like Celine Dion and Wayne Newton have performed for decades. High-energy variety shows, comedy-driven adult acts, and cabaret-style performances still draw audiences, but they now compete with large-scale productions, magic shows, and headliner residencies. The scene has evolved, but its spirit remains.
